Sunday 29th June, 2008
It has been a hugely stressful week, with organising our trip, working five days this week, preparing our house for our absence as well as dealing with sick children. However, the big day has finally arrived. While Bronte, Chelsea and Ellie seem to be on the road to recovery (after suffering from a nasty gastro bug), Tenealle started showing the signs of also being sick last night (Saturday) and was up most of the night vomiting. Would she be okay to travel? Would the airlines allow her to travel?????

The girls made the most of the in-flight entertainment and watched several movies as well as played Nintendo and other games. About an hour into the flight, I noticed Darren looked a little greyer than usual and before long, he started vomiting and making very speedy dashes to the lav!! The poor thing was sick for several hours and we felt so sorry for him. He was a real soldier about it and did his best to subtle about being so ill!!
It was a relief to finally arrive at Changi Airport, Singapore. Our stop over at Singapore was for five hours and it was such a lifesaver. We were able to relax a little more and enjoy the amazing airport. We could not believe the size and cleanliness of the airport. The girls just loved it and while Bronte, Chelsea and Ellie enjoyed playing on the in-door play ground, Tenealle found an internet cafe (she was having withdrawals by this stage) and checked in with all her friends. Darren and I took the opportunity to relax on the comfy lounges and even enjoyed a free foot massage.
Our next flight was with Swiss Air. After about two hours of flying, we stopped at Bangkok to drop off and pick up some passengers and then headed off for our final, long leg of our journey to Zurich. The flight was almost twelve hours long but fortunately we were able to nap on and off. The girls were fantastic and managed to keep themselves amused (with the help of the in-flight entertainment system) when they were awake. It was a long, long flight and we were relieved to finally touch down at Zurich airport. How wonderful it was to pass straight through the passport check-points, customs and baggage claim in less than twenty minutes. I can't tell you the joy it was to see Terri-Lyn's face smiling at us through the glass doors of the airport. After six long months of not seeing her, our tiredness and any lingering queasy bellies were soon forgotten and we chatted happily on our hour long drive from Zurich airport to their home in Dagmersellen.
SWITZERLAND
WE'RE HERE....
Monday 30th June, 2008
When we arrived to the Komps house, Mark and the girls were at school so we settled in and enjoyed our first hot shower in two days. The house is situated amongst other similar looking homes in a type of 'mini community'. There are four levels to the home and it is truly beautiful and well maintained. All the residents share walking spaces, a playground and other facilities.
After settling in, Terri walked us to the shops and we did a little grocery shopping and looking around. The small village is just gorgeous and so quaint. Every one is friendly and you rarely walk past someone without hearing 'greuzi' (pronounced 'grootsi') which is a formal hello to people you don't know very well.
We came home and were thrilled to find Mark and the girls home for lunch and of course the girls had lots and lots and lots of catching up to do!! Once we had finished lunch, the girls and Mark headed off back to school and Terri took is into a nearby village called Sursee where we purchased train tickets for our time here and we had a walk through the 'old village' and stopped at a cafe for a nice cold beer (and cokes for the girls).

After this, we visited the Lucerne Lion monument and the old and very amazing Lucerne bridge (Chapel bridge) which is over 700 years old! This gave us great photo opportunities and I think the girls were sick of smiling by the end of the day. We spent alot of our day walking through the streets and were amazing at the beautiful architecture and the gorgeous art work on many of the buildings. The highlight was Lake Lucerne - an expansive body of crystal clear, flowing water. It runs through the city and the girls, Terri and Darren took the opportunity to take a couple of paddle boats into the lake for a ride while Ellie and I sat back on the cobble stoned path taking photos and enjoying the sunshine. Needless to say, it was a very quiet train ride home to Dagmersellen as we were so exhausted. The girls met a lady from Sydney on the train and they spent the ride home, chatting happily with her.

OH MY GOD!!!!! Today, we went to heaven!! The visit I have most been looking forward to - Mt. Pilatus!!

Once at the top we enjoyed the magnificent views - it truly was heaven. While the girls enjoyed a muffin and coke in the cafe, Terri, Mark, Darren and I braved the cool air outside and enjoyed a beer and bratwurst (German sausage) - and yes, we had to listen to all of Marks hilarious jokes about having our 'first German sausage'!!!

We then boarded the gondal bahn down to a lower level where we all had fun on the tobogans. The view down the tobogans was so amazing, some (Mark) took their eyes off the path, went a little fast and actually came off their rides!!! The girls particularly enjoyed the tobogans and had three rides in total.
After this, we hopped on the gondala's down to Kriens where we boarded another bus which took us to Lucerne. After just missing the train home, we did a little souvenir shopping where I purchased a Swiss Army knife for myself (so watch out!!). While we were exhausted after our amazing and unforgetable day, it didn't stop us staying up with Terri and Mark for a few drinks later that night.
While we enjoyed so many and amazing things here in Switzerland, Lucerne and Mt. Pilatus would have to be the most beautiful and spectacular sights we have had the pleasure of enjoying.
DAY 7
Sunday 6th. July, 2008
After enjoying a good nights sleep after our busy day yesterday, Mark suggested we leave the girls at home and the adults head out to the Schwingfest (a local wrestling sport) festival. We travelled about half an hour to a town called Wolhusen and braved the elements (it poured all day!!) for a traditional Swiss day of fun.
After a quick look around the festival (and Mark sneaking us into the V.I.P. area!), we watched some Schwinging (wrestling). The men wear a type of shorts garment and then have to wrestle each other until one opponent 'lays' his opponent down. It is certainly very popular here in Switzerland, with many villages showing off their best 'schwingers'. We also enjoyed watching the rock throwing competitions which is a little like shotput, but with rocks, of course!
We enjoyed a few beers out in the rain as well as some local cuisine (I was delighted to enjoy some pomme frites - fries!!). But the highlight for Terri and I was watching Mark and Darren using the mens outdoor urinal!! - and yes, I did get photos!!!
We listened to some traditional Swiss music and really felt that we got a good taste of Switzerland, all in one afternoon.
We are about to enjoy our last dinner here (BBQ) before we leave for Paris tomorrow morning.
While we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here, we are so looking forward to our time in Paris. We have been blessed by perfect weather (apart from today) and perfect company and are so grateful for this wonderful experience.
Terri-Lyn, Mark and the girls have been impecable hosts, totally spoiling us by cooking for us, washing for us and loving us. We are so grateful!!
PARIS.................HERE WE COME!!!!!
PARIS
DAY 8
Monday 7th. July, 2008
After a sad farewell to beautiful Switzerland, and the Komps (for a short time), we took the one hour flight from Zurich to Paris. The weather was cool when we arrived and the ride (driving transfer) from the airport to our apartment was fairly hairy. The traffic is extremely full on and there is a constant sound of horns being honked and frustrated drivers (and pedestrians) yelling and screaming. It was certainly an experience and I'm glad we will be relying on public transport rather than driving!!
After making our way up the one-person lift to our appartment, we met with Stephane, who we have rented our appartment from. He gave us a short run down on the basics and then we were left to unpack. The appartment is old, very clean and very very small. Everything is in miniature and with the six of us, we feel we are constantly in each others way, but I think we will be relatively comfortable here.
Once settled, we decided to take a walk down the street as we needed to pick up some groceries etc. The city is busy and congested. You really need to have your wheres about you here, as the traffic is horrendous! The grocery shopping was interesting - the supermarket was tiny but totally filled with people in a rush to get their necessities and then get out again. As we could not understand anything on the packaging, it took us a lengthy amount of time to get everything we needed.
It was a relief to get back to our appartment in one piece and we settled in for the night with some pizza and an early night. We are looking forward to Terri, Mark and the girls arriving tomorrow afternoon. We intend getting ourselves a five day rail and bus pass tomorrow that should allow us to move fairly easily from one place to the next. Apart from that, we intend just having a wander about Paris and do some sightseeing.
Tuesday 8th. July, 2008
Today, we thought we would get a get a feel for the city by setting out on foot to tour the city. After popping into the metro (train station) to purchase travel cards for the week, we set out for the centre of Paris.
It was warm but a little drizzly, so we doned rainjackets and braved the elements - nothing was going to stop us!! We found that all the major sights were relatively close to one another which was great. We had no sooner seen a major sight to turn the corner and bump into another. We strolled down the amazing Champs Elysees and I gapped in awe at the very, very exclusive boutique shops such as Chanel, Gucci, Ralf Lauren etc. etc. etc.... and soon found out how the other half lived. Many of the boutiques only housed a small selection of garments and I found a gorgeous little bag that was only 2,500 Euro!!
As we were walking down the street, Darren looked up and there it was - the one monument we had all been dying to see (especially Chels) - THE EIFFEL TOWER.
We were amazed at the way we just stumbled across it and we excited to get many photos of us standing on the bridge over the River Seine with the Eiffel Tower in the distance. We had to walk several blocks until we were actually at the base of the tower and were amazed at the sheer size of the structure. We spent some time enjoying the sunshine on the lawns of the base of the tower and Darren met some fellow Aussies (a couple of young backpacking lads from Brisbane) and enjoyed a few yarns with them. After this, we walked backed down the Champs-Elysees towards the Arc de Triomphe which is just beautiful. It is hard to believe it was built by Napeleon in 1836 and we were here in 2008 looking at it!! It is an amazing sight and we are hoping to go back to climb it in a couple of days. Apparently, a few dignitaries were in town so a military parade was under way at the base of the Arc which we were able to watch. Darren also enjoyed watching the manic traffic conditions in this area and we decided that it was definately a case of 'survival of the fittest' for anyone brave enough to be on the roads!!

The girls had just about had enough sightseeing for the day so we had a bite to eat at McDonalds (much to their delight!!) before the journey home.
DAY 10
Wednesday 9th. July, 2008
After much planning and excitement, the day the girls have been looking forward to the most had finally arrived - DISNEYLAND -

We headed out early (about 8am) forthe hour and a half, two train ride journey to Disneyland. All I can say is WOW!! It is an amazing sight and everything is on such a huge scale. We had access to both Disney Parks and after meeting with the Komps set off for a day of fun!!
We enjoyed many, many, many rides, had our photos taken with Mickey Mouse (a highlight for me) and watched some of the shows on offer including the Disney parade, the Disney stunt show and the High School Musical show. The older girls really loved the high impact rides - Terri discovered she did not!! The little ones loved Fantasy land and Ellie felt like she was in a fairy tale!! After lining up for almost an hour for some of the rides, it was a little disappointing to find that the rides were often over in less than a couple of minutes. I took Ellie and Chels on Aladdin's magic carpet ride as well as others. Mark took the girls on the Tower of Terror and Indiana Jones ride which they survived - just! We all enjoyed the Pirates of the Carribean and the Thunder Mountain ride (although poor Chelsea nearly had to change her undies!).
Many, many rides later, we were all feeling exhausted. After a little bit of souvenir shopping (of course) and some dinner we looked at our watches and realised it was almost 10pm. As it doesn't get dark until so late, we had almost lost track of time.
Tenealle left with the Komps (who were driving) and Zoe came back with us. Surprisingly, the girls were still full of beans on the journey home, but Darren and I were unusually quiet!! After a nervous walk back to our appartment, through a seedy part of Paris, we were so relieved to finally get home and be able to lay our heads on our pillows.
We will be celebrating Bronte's 11th birthday tomorrow, so we will leave our plans open. All being well, we will catch up with Terri, Mark and the girls for dinner.
DAY 11
Thursday 10th July, 2008
We didn't surface until well after 9am this morning and needless to say, after our very tiring day yesterday, were all feeling a little worse for wear.
Bronte enjoyed opening a couple of little gifts and cards this morning as today is her 11th. birthday. We have told her that we will buy her something special while we are away so she is scouring every shop or kiosk we stumble across for that 'special' gift. Chelsea's birthday is tomorrow, so she is doing the same!
Darren spent the morning making a special fry-up of bacon, eggs and toast which gave us a little bit of energy. However none of us felt much like doing anything so we spent the morning slopping about the apartment in our PJ's. Chelsea caught up on her travel journal that she has been meticulous about completing every day and is a wonderful reflection of her experiences and observations. Ellie spent the morning colouring and drawing and Bronte and Zoe spent some time on the computer sending emails. Darren and I diddled around not doing much in particular.
By about 2pm our bellies were starting to rumble and we decided to go for a walk. We didn't have to venture far before we stumbled upon the Canal St. Martin. As it was a lovely day, and we were in no hurry, we took our time and were able to stop by a cafe for a beer (and coke for the girls!). On the way home, we stopped by the grocery store for some much needed supplies before heading home.
Terri, Mark, Madeleine, Alex and Tenealle are coming over tonight and we will have dinner together as well as a birthday cake for Bronte. Should be fun!!
DAY 12
Friday 11th. July, 2008
We celebrated Bronte's 11th birthday last night with Mark, Terri-Lyn and the girls at a local cafe on the St. Martin Canal (near our apartment). We all enjoyed an outdoor meal of pizza and pasta overlooking the lovely Canal and had a wonderful night. It was a warm, still night and we finished off with ice-cream cake back at our apartment.
After another late night, we woke early for a 9am arrival at the Eiffel Tower (in an attempt to beat the crowds). Chelsea enjoyed opening some cards and little gifts before we left, as today was her 8th birthday. She was very excited as she had been talking all year about spending her birthday at the Eiffel Tower (how special for her!!).
We met the Komps at the Tower at about 9.30 and took the cable car up to the second tier of the Tower where we enjoyed magnificent views and took the opportunity to take lots and lots of photos. It was a cool morning but much, much cooler up the tower. We had not planned on a cool day, so we doned our rain jackets (as it was our only means of warmth) and just toughed it out!
We then hopped back on the cable car which took us up to the very top of the Eiffel tower and were met by the most amazing views of Paris we had seen. By walking around the deck of the tower, we were able to see Paris in its entirety and we were not disappointed. Of course, the camera was working in overtime and we spent a good hour or so in absolute amazement of all the wonderful sights. As the crowds started to build and our bones got colder and colder, we decided to make our descent back down to earth. It was a wonderful experience and I think we all felt it was one of the best things we had done during our time in Paris.
After a bite to eat, we took the Metro to the Louvre. Mark and Darren took the girls to a large carnival across the road from the Louvre where they enjoyed rides, particularly the bungee trampoline!! While they were doing this, Terri and I headed into the Louvre. The building, or buildings, are amazing. The sheer size of them is awesome and the architecture was nothing short of mind-blowing.
As we were both interested in the Egyptian Antiquities collection, we started there. The art of Ancient Egypt is so amazing when you consider that some of the clay tablets of hieroglyphic writing dated back to about 2,000 BC - and we were standing in front of it in 2008 AD!! It was so interesting and we both thoroughly enjoyed looking at the displays and art work.
We then set out to find the Mona Lisa and it didn't take long to find her. As we headed into the expansive room that she is housed in, crowds of people were flocked around her desperately trying to get the 'perfect photograph'. Not to be left out, Terri and I stuck our elbows out and muscled our way to the front where we were able to enjoy her beauty. And yes, we took one or two photos as well. She is very impressive and I dare say, I felt her eyes follow me as we walked away!!!!
After this, we walked through some of the other collections and felt in awe of the beauty surrounding us. Even the painted ceilings were a sight to behold. We also enjoyed 'studying' some of the nude male sculptures and yes, we did take some photos (purely for study purposes only!!).
Both Terri and I really enjoyed the Louvre, although we only had such a short time there. You could literally spend days touring through all the various collections.
We then met up again with the gang for some afternoon tea before hopping on the train to our respective apartments. Mad and Alex are staying with us tonight while the birthday girl (Chels) and Bronte are staying with Zoe at Terri and Marks.
Tomorrow is our last full day here in Paris. We haven't yet decided how we will spend our last day but I'm sure we will be up early for another busy day!!!!
DAY 13
Saturday 12th July, 2008
We woke to a cool morning with rain clouds hovering overhead. We had all slept in, after the people in the upstairs apartment had kept us awake for much of the night, so we were all on the go-slow.
After breakfast, a catch up on some washing and a bit of a diddle around the apartment, we decided to head out to Versailles (a town out of Paris). We had heard all about the beauty of the Chateau De Versailles (an old Royal palace) and thought we would take a look. It took us an hour and a half and three train connections to finally arrive at Versailles, but it was worth it.
The town is just beautiful and as it is quite a way out of Paris, I would believe it is an area that alot of tourists would miss. It didn't take long to find The Chateau De Versailles, the palace built by Louis XIV. As it was already quite late in the day, we decided not to waste time by waiting in the very, very long queue to enter the palace, but rather look around outside. To say that the palace is huge is an understatement. There are numerous wings and the architecture is intricate and amazing. The immaculate and detailed French gardens surrounding the estate were truly a sight (even the girls were in awe) and provided plenty of photo opportunities.
The private domain of Marie-Antoinette was also on show as well as the beautiful water features and gardens enjoyed by her all those years ago.
Although we only spent a couple of hours at the palace, I'm glad we made the effort. The town of Versailles is really beautiful and quite different to the bustling town of Paris.
Darren and I are having a 'grown ups' night out tonight with Terri and Mark while the girls look after one another here, in our apartment. I am really looking forward to it before we farewell Paris tomorrow for Singapore.
We will be flying out of Charles De Gaulle at 6.35 pm, heading back to Zurich. We then have a three hour stop over in Zurich before the 14 hour flight to Singapore, where we overnight. An hour long ferry ride the next day will take us to Bintan Island for our week of total R & R. As this is our final leg of our holiday, we are feeling a little sad, but not too sad, as we are really looking forward to sitting by the pool and relaxing with a cocktail or two and a good book!!!
I am not looking forward to saying our 'goodbyes' to the Komps tonight - the time we have spent with them has really been the highlight of our time abroad. We have had such a wonderful time, but it has been made even more special because we have had them to share the experience with - how lucky we are!!
Next time I write, we will be sunning ourselves by a pool at the Bintan Lagoon Resort. I am hoping we will have internet access (goodness knows what Tenealle will do if we don't!!) so I can keep up-to-date with our blog, but if not, you will just have to wait until we return to cold, wintery Melbourne on Wednesday 23rd July.
Take care one and all, and in the words of Australia's own Jeff Fenech, 'I loves youse all!!'
DAY 14
Sunday 13th July, 2008
As we had to be out of our apartment by 10am but our flight to Singapore wasn't leaving later in the afternoon, we decided to hop on the train (yet again!!) to check out the a couple of Paris' sights that we hadn't had time to see.
First stop was the Sacre Coer (Sacred Heart Church). I'm so glad we managed to see it as it was just amazing. The building itself is awesome and in such great condition for a building of its vintage. We were priviledged enough to visit at 11am - just in time to witness a mass in procession. The sound of the organ was amazing and listening to the Priest perform the service was a wonderul experience. As we looked around at the beautiful architecture of this amazing church and all the beautiful artwork, I found myself getting quite emotional - there was an amazing presence in the church that was truly uplifting. It was a really special moment for me and one that I will treasure forever.
After this, we sat outside on the steps of the church and enjoyed some lunch while enjoying the views of Paris. We then walked around the area before heading of to see a couple of other sights.
Our taxi transfer arrived back at our apartment at 3pm where we were taken to the airport for our departure.
DAY 15
Monday 14th. July, 2008
It was a long flight to Singapore as we had to fly to Zurich first which was a bit of a pain. We stopped over for three hours before boarding another flight to Singapore (via a quick stop in Bangkok). We were very tired but relieved to finally arrive in Singapore.
Although we just wanted to go straight to bed once we checked into our motel, we knew that the shops were opened for another couple of hours and the temptation was too great, so we headed off for some Singapore shopping.
I was able to purchase two pairs of lovely shoes for under $30 for both pairs and Tenealle was able to get some Chucks (Converse shoes) really cheaply. The girls each bought a souvenir or two before we had a bite to eat and headed back to our motel and to bed.
BINTAN ISLAND, INDONESIA
DAY 16
Tuesday 15th July, 2008
We were up early and before enjoying a buffet breakfast, we headed off by bus to our ferry ride which would take us to our final destination Bintan Island.
The ferry was a bit rough and I was feeling a little queasy during the hour long journey. I was glad to finally reach land and we were meeted by some lovely Indonesion people who welcomed us with cool drinks as we arrived at our resort.
The resort is just amazing. The staff are beautiful and our rooms are large and comfortable. The weather is very humid and hot, so after unpacking, we headed straight to the pool (much to the girls delight!!) There are several pools with slides and bars which the girls are delighted by!
We went out to dinner and then headed off to bed - the first propper nights sleep since leaving Paris. We were all starting to feel over exhausted and in need of some sleep.
DAY 17
Wednesday 16th July, 2008
We didn't surface until lunch time today!! We totally missed our breakfast which we were so disappointed by, but we obviously needed to sleep.
We had some fruit in our room before heading off to the beach which is a stones throw away from our room. The water is chrystal clear and just so warm. We enjoyed just sunning ourselves by the water before heading over to one of the resorts many pools for a day of relaxing, swimming, reading and enjoying each others company. I dare say, this will be the order of the day during our stay here.

DAY 18
Thursday 18th July, 2008
After a scrumptious buffet breakfast, we caught a taxi to a nearby village for some shopping. It wasn't until we got there that we realised that the shopping village is owned by the resort and the prices were very expensive.
Fortunately, we were approached by a lovely local man named Louis who, seeing the opportunity to earn a few dollars for himself, asked us if we would like him to show him a 'traditional' Indonesion village. He borrowed a seven seater van and took us to a very, very tradtional little village called Pasar Oleh Oleh. It was a real cultural experience for all of us. The locals live in little run down shacks and have very little in the way of material possessions. The funny part is, that they all seem so happy and were very welcoming to us and just adored the girls, particularly Ellie.
Our 'guide' Louis was very generous of his time and went out of his way to show us the sights and advised us where to shop and how much to pay for things. He took all our shopping for us so we didn't have to carry it around and had a great sense of humour also. He didn't speak much English, but was a warm and friendly man, like all the Indonesions seem to be. We had a great day and as it was so hot, we were glad to get back to our resort for a swim!!
While Darren and the girls enjoyed the afternoon in the pool, I enjoyed a traditional Javanese massage on the beach. It was absolutely the best massage I have ever had with lots of pounding, pinching and unusual sensations. I know it all sounds a little wierd, but it was wonderful - it was also very cheap, so I dare say, I will be back for another one soon!! During the massage, it started raining, and it was a wonderful experience laying on the beach being massaged with the warm breeze blowing over me while listening to the rain hit the thatched roof. Ah, the bliss!!!!
It wasn't long before the rain turned into a heavy tropical rainstorm. That didn't stop the girls from swimming a little longer, before Darren and I coaxed them out of the pool and into a warm shower!!
After another lovely dinner, we enjoyed a relaxed walk around the resort before heading off to our room for the night.
DAY 19
Friday 19th July, 2008
Today, we woke to beautiful blue skies and after enjoying a relaxed and filling breakfast, threw on our togs and decided to spend a day by the pool. The girls, Darren and I had a ball on the water slide and Darren enjoyed making a series of 'new' friends!!
The weather here has been hot and humid (much to the despair of my poor hair!!) but we have experienced quite heavy rains in the afternoons. The rain does nothing to cool the air and really just adds to the humidity. As the rains cease as quickly as they start, we have not let them stop us enjoying ourselves. The girls are happy to continue swimming while Darren and I relax under the poolside umbrellas, having a drink or three and reading and chatting.
We have also enjoyed some of the other activities the resort has to offer such as table tennis (I whipped Tenealle's butt!!) and Chelsea got a tattoo today across the bottom of her back.
The staff are so beautiful and really spend lots of time with the guests chatting and helping out in any way they can. We have really fallen in love with the Indonesian people as well as their relaxed lifestyle.
We are desperately trying not to start counting down the days until we need to leave but it is looming over us like a dark cloud!! We will endevour to enjoy our remaining days as much as possible.
DAY 20
Saturday 20th July, 2008
Once again, we rose to a beautiful warm, sunny day so after filling our bellies at breakfast, we headed down to the beach for a swim.
The waters here are chrystal clear and so warm. There are deck chairs and tables with umbrellas for the beach goers and you don't need to fuss with bringing down towels etc. as everything is provided for you when you get down there!!
After spending an hour or two in the water, we decided to go and check out the beach activities on offer. As we were swimming towards the shore, I felt a whipping sensation across my legs followed by a sharp stinging feeling. I knew it wasn't good, so I made a bee line for the sand. After coaxing the girls out, Bronte and Ellie started complaining about stinging over various parts of their bodies. We developed red blotches over the areas that had been stung and the pain was quite severe. After rinsing ourselves under the beach showers, we headed over to talk to one of the Indonesian activities guides who guessed that we must have been stung by jelly fish as there had been some other reported stings in the previous days. After an hour or two, we were feeling much better, thank goodness, but I think it will take Bron and Ellie some real convincing to get them back in the ocean!!
Darren, Tenealle and Chelsea decided to hire a jet ski for half an hour. They had an absolute ball tearing around the beach (they have a roped off area for the jet skiers) and Tenealle was able to drive it herself, which she really enjoyed. I think Darren enjoyed it more than anyone though, and I think he is secretly trying to figure out how he might be able to buy his own toy!!!
We spent the afternoon by the pool swimming, reading, drinking and relaxing and of course, endured another Indonesian rain storm!! Darren enjoyed a massage on the beach today which he really enjoyed - I am hoping to spoil myself to another one tomorrow. The days are so taxing and we understand that this is a hard life but we are prepared to persevere through!! Really, really, really trying not to think about coming home - only two more full days left here!!!
I am surmising that our remaining days will be much the same as the previous days (I hope so, anyway!!). Will try to enjoy every minute!!
DAY 21
Sunday 21st. July, 2008
Today was spent much the same as yesterday. It was so wonderul to relax with the family by the pool and not think about too much else. Our biggest ordeal was deciding what time to eat lunch!!
Of course, as per the usual, another rain storm swept through the resort late morning, but it remained hot all the while and did nothing to keep us out of the water.
I decided I needed to have another Javaneese massage on the beach today, just to confirm that it was indeed as wonderful as my memory served me. And yes, it was!
We are all well aware that tomorrow will be our last day here in heaven but we no-one is talking about it - we are just trying to enjoy every minute here!!
DAY 22
Monday 22nd. July, 2008
We took a little longer this morning at breakfast - trying desperately to savour our last scrumptious buffet breakfast here in Bintan Island. We felt a little disappointed that we awoke to a hot but otherwise dreary, cloudy day - or perhaps that was just the way we were feeling as it was our last day before heading home to Melbourne. Although we have missed home and our family and friends, we have enjoyed ourselves so much more than we thought possible and it will indeed be very sad to end our wonderful holiday.
Once again, we took our positions by the pool and the girls enjoyed another day swimming and going up and down the pool slide. Tenealle and Darren hired out 2 A.T.V. (all terrain vehicles) which is like a motor bike with four wheels. They had alot of fun tearing around and came back to us covered in mud, literally!!
The girls got their (painted-on) tatoos today and think they look pretty fantastic!
I totally over-indulged today and treated myself to another massage on the beach. Well, there is not that much to do here except relax, relax, relax - and I was getting a bit over swimming!! It was truly magical and I floated back to Darren and the girls so much lighter and relaxed!! I wish I could bottle the feeling of having a Javaneese massage on the beach in the warm air, with the sounds of the ocean in the background!! I will just have to rely on my memories.
We enjoyed our final dinner tonight at the Kopi-O restaurant (one of our favourites) and had a discussion about our favourite memories of our trip. I think we all decided that we didn't necessarily have a favourite destination as such, but enjoyed different aspects and sights in each of the places we visited. We all agreed that the absolute highlight was the time we spent with Terri-Lyn, Mark and the girls and feel so blessed that we were able to spend much of this wonderful adventure with them. The girls all commented that they are already missing Madeleine, Alex and Zoe and can't wait to see them again when they return in January. Darren and I feel the same - we will truly miss them!!
We have begun packing our bags and will leave here at midday tomorrow for our ferry ride back to Singapore. Our flight for Melbourne doesn't leave until 9pm tomorrow night and we will be back on home turf just after 6am Wednesday morning. I just know it will be a long, quiet flight home!!
SEE YOU SOON!!
FINAL WORD FROM HOME....
Tuesday 5th. August, 2008
We have been home for almost two weeks and what a culture shock it has been for us all. We arrived home at about 6.30 am on the Wednesday and while some spent the better part of the day sleeping, others got to work unpacking and catching up on washing etc. We were all back at work and school the following day and in hindsight, we should have had an extra day or two at home. By the time the weekend came around, we all fell into a heap and still don't feel that we have fully recovered from jet lag and tiredness.
With a couple of weeks of reflection behind us, all I can say is how fortunate we are for our experience. Before we left there were so many reasons why traveling with a large family was a bad idea. How wrong I was!! The girls were amazing and Darren and I were so proud of them. They never complained about the long days walking around Paris or the fact that they were tired or the long waits in airports. They loved every experience they had and all seemed so grateful for the opportunity to travel abroad. They loved the time they spent with Madeleine, Alexandra and Zoe and are missing them dreadfully now. They are now counting down the months until they can see them again.
They are still talking about some of the amazing things they saw, and the interesting experiences they had : from spending a day with their cousins in a Swiss school to viewing the city of Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower to visiting a traditional Indonesian village. The beauty of it all is, they will appreciate it more as they get older and fully understand what a great opportunity they had.
As for Darren and I, we are still in awe of all we did and saw. Travelling is something we have dreamed about for so long and we are so happy that we had the opportunity to enjoy it with our girls. The time we spent in Switzerland with Terri-Lyn, Mark and the girls was a real highlight for us and we had such an amazing time with them. They treated us so well and we are so grateful to them for sharing their home, their time and their experiences with us.
Before we left, so many people told us about the 'travel bug' that one can catch once one has travelled. Well, we have all caught it and are already talking about other destinations we would love to visit. My hope is that the girls will be inspired to travel when they are older. Darren and I definately want to travel more (once the girls are older) and we are already dreaming about it.
We have taken many hundreds of photos and lots of video to remind us of our holiday and this blog has been a great tool for me to put my experiences and thoughts on record. We will treasure these memories forever.
THE END.....(For now...)
